According to the FDA, fewer than 50% of patients are adherent
to their medications as prescribed and about 30% of prescriptions
go unfilled.
There are many barriers to adherence including
patient issues, medical issues, and health care system issues. Patient
issues, such as low health literacy, fear of side effects, denial,
and stigma, have a direct influence on medication adherence and
treatment outcomes.
CTE’s customized adherence education initiatives can have
a positive effect on medication adherence for people with a variety
of health conditions. Increasing health literacy, communicating
methods to promote adherence, and reducing stigma can increase
medication adherence rates. Successful adherence programs that
engage the patient to become more involved in their treatment
and personalize their treatment goals can motivate patients toward
adherence.
CTE’s Educational Design Process provides patients with useful tools
and motivation strategies to encourage them to have an active role
in treatment and increase their medication adherence. This is an
important goal for both our initiative sponsors and the health outcomes
of those patients for whom they support.
